THE PLAY DESCRIBED
The first hole was halved in fours. Mrs. Hollis struck the poplar tree with her approach, but won on in three and took one putt to Miss Tolhurst's two. The second hole was halved in fives after good drives to the top, but both were short in their approaches, taking three s|ets to reach the green and two putts eath. The third and fourth holes saw even play to produce halves in fives and fours. l Hitting off the fifth tee Miss Tolhurst hooked her drive to Btrike a poplar tree fiffy yards in front, and her hall came to rest between the boles of two ttees. She pitched through to strike another, hut ' the ball cleared to the fairway. Mrs. Hollis, not be outdone, " chose a poplar a hundred yards on the right for her target, and scored a centre., Her ball rebounded back 30 yards to the foot of another tree, and she also had to pitch clear with a mashie. Both used their woods for iti ng shots to the green, which Mrs. Hollis reached, hut Miss Tolhurst was a little short. A run in and two putts to Miss Tolhurst aad two putts to Mrs. Hollis for.thcj latter to score the first win 5 to 6. The sisth and seventh were holed in fours and threes after Miss Tolhurst nearly holed a thirty-foot putt at the
latter for a two. Mrs. Hollis one up. At the eighth hole, " Shirley 's," both had good drives and seconds to be on the green with their pitches. Mrs. Hollis lipped the hole for a i'our and was down in five. Miss Tolhurst was hhort with her run-up putt, a fortylooter, and just missed the ne^t, a sixf ooter, for a half. Mts. Hollis' hole 5 to 6 and 2 ujf for the match. At the ninth Mrs. Hollis ended near the fence with her second, and the pin* was slightly faded out by the tree. She played her ^ third to the left of the green. Miss Tolhurst kept to the centre and was nicely on with a beautiful pitch shot of 150 yards. She nearly holed a 15-foot putt with her nest. Mrs. Hollis left herself with a ten-foot putt for a half which she duly got. A half in fives. Mrs. Hollis two up at the turn. Short Putt Missed. . Miss Tolhurst duffed her drive at the next which ended up a hundred yards away on the eighteeuth fairway. She recovered well and was on the green in three, where Mrs. Hollis had arrived in two. Miss Tolhurst then sank a 16foot putt which hung on the lip of the hole" for so'me seconds before taking the dive. Miss Tolhurst duly sank her twelve-footer when Mrs. Holhs was sitting "pjetty" alongside the hole. Mrs. Hollis one up. The short fourteenth was won by Aliss Tolhurst, three to four, after a half jooked certain, but Mrs. Hollis missed another short putt. The gam» was now all-square. Miss Tolhurst from here on seemed to tire, and the accuracy of her short work faded. At the fifteenth she pulled her approach off the Jine to find the rough beliind tho bunker to the left of the green, and pitched up too strong to ovar-Tun the green. Mrs. Hollis was nicely on with her second and with two putjts won the hole four to five. At the sixtenth, after good fairway shots, both found the green with their •approaches. Miss Tolhurst's screwed away to ihe left, however. She ran a long putt well up to the liole, but Mrs. Hollis, sinking a twelve-footer, was again two up, jn four to five. She then won the seventeenth in three to four with a beautiful tee shot to the green,
followed by two putts. Miss Tolhurst was off the line to the left of the green and through with her next taking two putts for a four. Mrs. Hollis three up. / At the eighteenth two good drives to left of the fairway, but Miss Tolhurst inade a weak approach from a hundred yards out that left her still fifty to go. Mrs. Hollis was on with her second, and Miss Tolhurst was there for three. Mrs. Hollis nearly holed out for a three, lipping the hole. Miss Holhurst holed out with two putts. Mrs. Hollis's hple, four to five, for her to stand four up at the end of the first round.
