WOMEN'S GO'LF Final Between Mrs Hollist, and A9Jss Toihurst $ . AUSTRALIA v. N.Z. The finaLof the New Zealand ladies' amateur golf clianipionship will be contested by Mrs. G. Hollis, Hawera, and Miss E. Toihurst, Australia, to-morrow over 36 holes at- the Waiohiki links. This pair emerged froni the semi-finals played this morning "after comparatively comfortable victories. The first of the semi-6uals» was that between Mrgs Hollis and Miss J. Betts, Nelson, the former scdring an eas.v win bv seven up and six to plav. Honours were more keenly contested in tbe otber semi-final, in wliicli Miss S. Toihurst, tbe sole remaining memher of tlie Anstralian team competing at tbe tournament. defeated -tbe Hastings cbampion, Miss P. Helean, by three up and two to play. . Results of this morning's games were ns .follows : — Mrs. G- -Hollis (Hawera) defeated Miss J. Bi&ts (Nelson) 7 and 6. Miss S. Toihurst (Australia) defeated Miss P. Helean (Hastings) 3 and 2. Details of the Play. The match between Mrs. G. Hollis, Hawera, and Miss J. Betts, Nelson, was very one sided. The first two holes weiu halved in fives. At the first Mrs. Hollis was "sliaded out by the popiar tree for her second shot and played safe to right of green. At the second she failed to get up the terrace and had to play a high pitch shot to find the fairway on top. She then settled down to her game and always had the upper hand of Miss Betts who as has been characteristic of her play during this tournament started off indifferently. At the third she played her second over the biuik to the left oi the green and failed to get up with three attempts. Mrs. Hollis won six holes in succession by sound play and halving the ninth in fives was six up at the turn. She went out in 38, oue over par, as against Miss Betts' 47.
At the tenth Mrs. Hpllis was up the sand hill to the left of the green with her second, whilst Miss Betts was to the right beyond the bunker from where she played a nice pitch to the green and holed out with her next. Mrs. Hollis found the green with her third but took two putts. Miss jBetts ' hole and the game 5 up and eight to play in Mrs. Hollis favour. Mrs. Hollis then won the two next holes in par figures to take the match seven up and six to play. More interest was taken in the second match of the semi-finals between Miss S. Toihurst, Royal Melbourne, and Miss P. Helean, Hastings, and a fair gallery followed from the staTt tp swell to about two hundred over the second half. Both players hit beautifully from the tees with Miss Helean getting the greater length; on several occasions she outdrovo her opponent by fifty yards. Miss Toihurst, however, played very accurately around the green, her long approaches being pretty to watch. Time after time' she placed1 her ball on the green from distances of a hundred to a hundred and fifty yards. Her putting too was very accurate and.^ on the ninth she holed out a tkirty-foot putt for a win. Miss Helean 's play on the green was uucertain and that is where the margin between tho two counted for most. The first hole was played evenly, two drives well placed, on with their seconds and two putts to each, a half in foura. Approaching .tho second Miss Helean put her ball out of bounds and was short of the green with her fourth (ineluding penalty). On with her fifth she concedod the hole to Miss Toihurst who was near the pin for three. Miss Toihurst oue up. The third was halved in sixes after Miss Helean had been down the terrace to the right with her second and Miss Toihurst iu an awkward iie near tho bank ou tho left. They both took four to find the greeu and finish with two putts each. At the fourth "The lliver" Miss Helean pullcfi her tee shot to end forty yards to the left of the green but
pitched niccsly on to finish at the far side of the green. Miss Toihurst was nicely on with her tee ehot, twelvo feet from the pin, .but took two putts to hole out while Miss Helean saiik a beautiful twenty-footer for a half. Both got good drives away at the fifth^ Miss Toihurst to the edge of the terrace aud Miss Helean 's fifty yards in advance below. Miss Toihurst found the green with her next but Miss Helean a little short was on with her thir,d. Two putts to each for Miss Toihurst to win four to five and stand two up. The next liolo was halved ,in fours. Miss Helean made a brave effort to sink a fifteenfoot putt for a three, just . missing by an inch whilst Miss Toihurst ran 'in well from the edge of the green' to finish off with holing an eight-foot putt. Miss Toihurst then took the next "The Short" in three to four, when Miss Helean missed a five-foot putt for a half. Miss Toihurst three up. Afc the long eighth Miss Helean was within fifty yards of the green witn her tsecond, while Miss Toihurst, who was 150 yards off, after getting in the rough with her drive, played a great approach shot to the green. Miss Helean ran in nicely and two putts to each the hole was halved in fives. Two good drives and seconds for Miss Toihurst to find the green with a long approach again. Miss . Helean 's third ended up on the slope in fron't of the green. She placed her fourth within six feet of the pin but Miss Toihurst wou the hole with a thirty-foot putt four to five. Miss Toihurst four up at the turn. Miss Toihurst put her drive over the fence at the tenth, and with a penalty played her third off the tee to the left. Miss Helean was in the same region \md topped her second to short of green. Miss Toihurst was up the sand-hills for her next and taking five to reach the green to Miss Helean ;s three concedsd the hole. Miss Toihurst three up. The eieventh was played evenly two drives, two brassies and two approaches from 140 yard3 to the front of the green. Then Miss Helean almost sank a 60foot run-in, missing by two inches. To which Miss Toihurst responded with one to within a foot. A half in fives. At the twelfth both played perfect drives with Mis3 Helean forty yards. ahead. They both failed to find the green with their next, Miss Toihurst 's ball resting on the brow and Miss Helean 's running back to the bottom. Both placed their third shots within a yard of the hole, Miss Toihurst sinking hers, and Miss Helean lapsing. Miss Toihurst four up and six to play. "The Return " came next, where Miss Toihurst went into the rough to the right, but placed a lovely iron shot just short of the green for her second. Miss Helean 's drive was nicely placed and she found the green and staved there with a long higli-pitch shot. Miss Toihurst ran thtough to the far edge of the green from where she took two putts. Miss Helean also two-putted to win the hole in four to live. Miss Toihurst 3/5. The short fourteenth was halved in threes. Miss Helean was in the hollow to the right after landinjj nn the green, but ran up the bank .nicely to hole her third. Miss Toihurst, short Of the green did likewise to get her three. Miss Toihurst was then three up with- four to play. Miss Helean hit a "perler" off i the tourteenth tee, 250 yards down the tairway. Miss Toihurst got a good drive but forty yards - shortor placed her second on the green. Miss Helean 's second ended just off the green at the back. Both ran in nicely and holing iv oue putt each, a half in fours was the result with Miss Toihurst three up and dormy. Off the sixteenth tee Miss lielean placed her drive nicely down the fairway to the left, but Miss Toihurst found the friuge of rough alongsido the bouudary fcuce, recovering well with her second to ccntre of fairway. Aliss Helean 's second, a long brassie, eased over to tho right to bounce out of bounds. Playing her ( fourth, with penalty, she ended just l'orty yards off tlio green and played her fifth to the back of the green. Miss Toihurst 's third, a long approach; found the bunker to the left of the green from which she took two shots to get out by only a foot. Two long pults to lie dead for each, the hole was halved in sevens for Miss Toihurst to win by three up and t\^o to play.
