Bowling SEASON STARTS

"Roamer")

Official Opening On Saturday

HAVELOCK NORTH GREEN

[a]

The bowling eeason ln Bawke'a Bay wjll le offleiaUy opbned on the Havelock North. green on Saturday at 8 p.m., When the president ©f the Centre, Mr W. Ross, will offitiate. All clubs affiliated to the Centre report increased memberahips, eo that there is every reasoa to look lorward to ac. enjoyahle ■eason. Though the season has not officially eommenced, many clubs have had their (reena open for a ' ' roll up" on the watm, iUnny days. Wairere were early 6n the move, and held their opening laat Saturday in ideal weather. There vu a representative attendance, and * very enjOyable aiternoon waa spent. The gree* is in splendid order, though ea the alow side at present, due to the heavy aoie of grass, but'it should certainLy improve as the season progresses. It was elosed early iast year to allow preparations to be made for this year, and the move ha? eertanly borne fruit, as a good "strike" of grass has been •ecured and it should, with careful at.tention, stand up to the season 'a wear and teur. The elnbs opening nest Saturday are: Havelock North, Kia Toe, Napier, Port Ahuriri and Waipukurau. The remainder will probably start activities Ihe followlng Saturday. During the break since last season, elubs have suffered losses, through deatlis of members, and "Roamer" joina in extending sympathy to those who have suffered breavement. The Hastings Club suffered a severe Joss in the passing of Mr Sid Knight, a very old and enthusiastic member and one of the best, if not the best, leads in the district in his younger days. The late Mr Knight took a very keen interest in bowling, and there wero not many tournaments he did not attend. Up to a tew years ago he was a regular attender at the greens, but for some time prior to his death, due to a bad leg, ha was not able to take the same active interest, though he usually turned up for a "look on." "Sid's" ffgure will ba greatly missed on the green. New President. The Centro's meetings wlll this season be presided over by Mr W. Ross, of the Havelock North club. "Bill," as he it more popularly known, h'as boon a member of the executive of the Centre for some years, where he has been. able to gain some knowledge of the running of affairs. Keen, alert and possessed of sound judgment, the new president ean be counted on to do his best in the interests of the game. He is a very enthusiastic bowler, and knows what bowlers want. The Centre should make good progress under his guidance. Mr Ross is following another valuable official in Mr F. D. Logan, the Tetiring president, of the Port Club. Mr Logan has heen playing the game for a good while, and combined with his executive ability the Centre 's affairs were conducted imoothly and efficiently. ' The Centre owes a debt of gratttude to Mr Somerset Smith for his long service as treasurer, which position fie has now relinquished. Mr Somerset Smith kept a careful eye on the finances, and his advice was alwayS accepted as being sound. The man who does his work behind the scenear, Secretary Percy Bear, Ib atill at the helm, and what Mr Bear doesn't know about running a bowling tournament isn't worth knowing. He has everytliing at his lingor tips, and carries a fund of information that ip always at the dispDsal of bowlers. To have a tournament without Percy— well, it wouldn'tf be a tournament. Here's hoping that he will continue in effic* for many more years to come. Improvements at Port. Most of the clubs have been busy during the winter vacation attending to their playing areas and eurroundinga. The Port Club is one that has been •xceptionally busy. It has made extensive improvements, including the •rection of a new pavilion and pro▼ision for two full-sized greens. All the members have put their shoulder to the wheel, and the expenses have been kept down to a minimum, so that the burden of paying for the pavilion will not be a very heavy one. Visitors to the Port on Saturday will see a wonderful change.
