w mm w . Cruiser Anchored in The Roadstead OFFICIAL CALLS PAID On her first visit to Napier, H.M.S. Leander arrived shortly befor© 9.30 a.m. yesterday, and anchored in tho roadstead. Th© cruiser, owing to the fact that its length is greater than that of Glasgow Wharf, will tiot come alongside, but will remain in th© roadstead during her stay at Napier.. Official calls . were paid to the vessel by Captain G. M. McCaskell, the Mayor of Napier, Mr C. O. Morse, th© Town Clerk, Mr. F. R». Wattera. the chairman of the Napier Harbour Board, Mr. T. M. Geddis, and later returned by Captain J. W. ltivett-Carnac and. Commander H. V. P. McClintock. Arrangements hav© been made by tho Kichardson Co. to transport children from the Napier schools out to the Cruiser f'or tours of inspection, but tliere is no provision for visits by the general public. Latest of her typ©, the Leander, in size and armament, presents a striking contrast with H.M.S. Dunedin, wellknown to most Hawke's Bay residents from her freqoent visits to this port. The 4850 tons of th© latter vessel are almost doubled by the 7,140 of the Leander. and while the Dunedin's engines Were capabl© of developing 40,000 horse-pow'er, the Leander' s will develop 72,000, and the length of the present visitor exceeds that of th© Dunedin by 110 feet. The Leander carries eight six-inch guns to the Dunedin's four, and four four-inch to th© Dunedin's three, each vessel being equipped with four threepounder auti-aircraft guns. While the new cruiser is. at Napier, residents will hav© the opportunity of seeing, from th© air at least, the up-to-date amphibian carried by the vessel and releused by means of a catapult from the foredeck.
