Visitor to Napier for Wedding Killed ACCIDENT AT THE PORT

On the eve of a wedding which he had come to Napier to attend, Joseph Smith, a Wellington watersider, aged 67, was struck by a motor-cax and killed at 30 o'clock last evening. _ He sustained injuries in the collision that were fatal almost immediately. Mr Smitli, who was staying with his brother in Hardinge road, 1'ort Ahuriri, cvossed the road toward the beach at about 10 p.m., and was struck vy ti motor-car driven by another Watersider, Mr P. L. Ireland, who had just finished work at the Breakwater. The impact threw the visitor liigh in " the air, and he fell on to the roof of the vehiclo, Whieli skidded into the fencework surrounding a small shrub on the edge of the rdad. Mr Irelaiid's car had just pulled out to pass another vehicle, and it appears that Mr Smith stood still and allowed the lirst car to pa,ss behind him, being struck by the other. He leaves a widow in Wellington, and a grown-up family. An inquest is to be opened for the purpose of hearing evidence of ideiltification at 9,40 tomorrow morning.
