QUEENSLAND SUGAR
Market in New Zealand TRADE AGREEMENT SUGGESTED (Received 6, 8.45 a.m.) BRISBANE, Oct. 5. Speaking at the annual conference of the Queensland Federation of Chambers of Commerce, the president, Mr George Groom, urged that the Premier, Mr Forgan Smith, who was now a world expert on sugar, should vi§it New Zealand and discuss with tho Dominion Government whether there were any meana by which New Zealand could alter its internal economy in order to permit the importation of Australian sugar on a much greater scale than at present. He said New Zealand 's purchases of sugar were upwards of £600.000 annually, and came chiefly from foreign countries. Australia supplied only £7000 worth. Some quid pro quo arrangement by Australia or a preferential trade agreements he thought, would provide a solution to the problem.
