HOUSING SCHEME
Start Made With Erection in Hastings AKINA STREET AREA
A start was made this morning with the erection of the flrst of the houses to be built under the Government hoiising scheme in Hastings. Tho area selected for the first batch Of houses is that. acquired by the Department of Housing in Akina street, where it is pfoposed to erect 24 houses. Yesterday Mr A. GayfOrd, representative of the Department, visited Hastings and eoTit'erred with the successful tenderers for the houses, and as a result the necessary authority was givcn for the work to be commenced immediately, men aetually starting work on the job this morning. Tweive of the houses are to be constructod by M.r W. H. A bbott, 10 by Mr E. P. Williams, and two by Mr P. Bridgeman, the last-mentioned being known as "twin hotises" in that there are to be two sets of residential quarters under tlie one roof, AU the houses are differently designed and due consideration has been given to the question of giving each house the maximum sunlight. ciome are to be constructed in timber, others in plaster and a number finished in brick veneer. The latest ideas of home-build-ing have been incorporated and there will ,be electric stoves and hot-water services installed, as well as all the usual conveniences. This morning there wero about a dozen men engaged by the three contractor.s, but it is expccted that within a very short time there will be over 50 men employed on the jobs. It is anticipated that the first of the houses wilj be available for oecupation early in the new year.
