Preparations for Satiirday's Meeting INTERESTING TRIALS
(By
A very interesting morning' s work was done on the Hastings tracks this morning, but the times recorded in the majority of cases were slightly slower than on Saturday. J. H. Jefferd, from Ngatarawa, and R. Gregory, from Clive, were in with their teams. Where not specified. the following trials took place on the plough: — • v m Master Cyklon (Stowe) was first out to gallop a mile on the course proper in 1.44$ — a very fair ecort. He was assisted home over the last five furlongs by Feiicitafion (Ireland). Master Cyklon was slightly lame when cooled off after this task. # » • s Mahutai (1. Briggs) was not extended in running six futlongs at an even paco atter doing a round previously at hali pate. » • • i Royal Minstrel, with Mr E. W. Symes in the saddle, who will ride the iour-year-oid in the Gloucester Cup on Saturday, was not galloped. He iboks iu the best racing condition. ' * * « Blue Tiger (J. Dooiey) was the only horse schooled. He again went impressiveiy. Aiter Hastings he goes to Wellington lor the hurdle races. * » • Padishah (B. Stowe) did a round on the plough in a shade better than 1.40 — as gooU as anything of the morning, although the lightweight carried diseounts the time somewhat, • * m The colt by Lord Quex: — Fondle strode leisurely over three furlongs. Fossicker was by no means extended to register 66secs. for five furlongs. Gasman toox 68secs. for the same distance, but he, too, was against the bit. * # • Flame Queen (B. Stowe) carried too many guns for Tullamore (I. Briggs) at the end of six furlongs run in 1.18£| The latter appeared to weaken over tae last bit, so may require a race before being back to winter form.
•• • • • Buster Brown (Cullen), on the course proper, registered 1146i for the mile when brought home the last five by Larwood, who finished four lengtns ahead of the Highweight candidate. # * • ' Fundy Bay (J. Dooiey) and Triplex (J. Forsyth) were restricted to a worltmg gallop over four furlongs in 52$secs. Both went weil, and from now on should make iniprovement, judging on their outward appearaace. » » • Trailer (J. Forsyth) was too good for Marsyas (J. Dooiey) over five furlongs in 65$secs. This was the first run along Marsyas has had since racing last winter.
• • • Cletrac, who is to start in the Higiiweight on Saturday, was not seriously galloped when taking 1.25 for the last six furlongs oi an easy once round. * « « The two Gloucester Cup candidates, Mercian Prince (Lock) and Daryill (T. McNeill) e registered 1.22 for the last six of seven furlongs. Tho latter was well back for the first half-mile, but^; improved somewhat over the last quarter. Mercian Prince is greatly improved since racing here in the winter. 0 * * Tree Sec (J. Forsyth), alone and not overtroubling himself, ran his round on tho plough in 1.464. He is another Cup candidate for Saturday next that meeta the eye as being exeeptionally forward. • • • Tiger Gain (Treacy) and Pladie (H. Callinan) were associated in a round gallop, at the end of which the watcn recorded 1.41J. This was a fair effort, as both horses were going well within themselves at the conclusion. • • • Maine (C. Cameron) and Shirred Ribbon (Gough) hopped off at the sixfufloug post, but frbm the very commencement Maine held the upper hahd to come home comfortably in the poor time of 1.21. Shirred Ribbon appears not to havo got over her Wanganui trip. • • « The Ring (S. Fanning) and Haille Selassie (J. Dooiey), on the course proper, came home the last three furlongs in a tick better than 39secs. Neither was extended. « * * Thala (J. Forsyth) was a good two lengths clear of Brunhilde (J. Campbell) at the end of half a mile in 51isecs., but neither was sent ou to make time.
• # ■# Taro (J. Dooiey) was gi.ven a working gallop over four furlongs to go very pleasingly when registering 524secs. This golding looks to bo back to his best. Winitanga (J. Dooiey)/ took 67secs. for her five furlongs. Soho (J. Forsyth) who, it is understod, is to start in' the Duke of Gloucester Cup, did his once round in 1.42, being brought home the last six furlongs by Great Sandy (J. Walsh) and Power Chief (I. Rohloff). Of the latter pair Great Sandy went the best. « • •
Money Raid (R. Gregory) was too fast for her stable companion (J. Forsyth) over four furlongs in 51secs., which was the fastest timed for this distaneo on tho plough this morning. © © © H'unling C'at (H. Callinan) and Black Fox (J. Dooiey) wero paired over six furlongs to register 1,1 8 but neither was ridden out when working sluggishly over the last portion of the gallop. , © • © Joe Louis (H. Young) tripped over three furlongs in 39secs. Amoroso (J. Webby), after jumping a trestle at the two and a-half furlongs post, ran his half-mile in 514secs., and did it well, too. « • • A gallop that appeaTed to interest the track-watehcrs®greatly was that of four of the two-year-olds, who went out to sprint three furlongs. The quartette consisted of Diana Tetrix (II. Young). Rakapanga (J. Dooiey), Merry Simon (H. Callinan), and Swcepalong (II. 1
Gilmer). The former proved the best, having a margin of three lengths at the finish; tho others finished in the order named. The time, 37Jsecs., was only fair. © m « Sardhu (J. McNaughton) and Laughing Song (J. Forsyth) sprinted down the straight. Hunter 's Eve (B. Stowe) just shaded Centrepoiso (Ireland) in a dash over a couple of furlongs.
