NEW LEAGUE FORMED HEADQUARTERS AT WANGANUI The initial meeting of the uewly reglstered United Maori Welfare League, inc., was held in Wanganui on Friday. There was a good atteudance, comprisxng important members of severai Maori tribes from various distriet8. The league has i'or its objects the welfare and unity of the Maori people, the promotion of which m the past has been retarded through 11 ,;.cct and disunity among several oi' the tribes. Former Governments did not encourago the formation of Maori committees. but the Maori people in general are iooking to the present Governinent for gui dance and advice in their complex difiicultied. • The Maori population, according to the 1934 census, now stands at 82,883, and it is felt that with their mcreasmg numbers some .eft'ort should be made to bring about a bettpr understanding between the various tribes m order that all might work tog ther for the welfare ruid ndvnnc.M.iaiu ut the raco.
