Wairere Club Opens Under Ideal Conditions CARGE CROWD PRESENT The 1937-38 bowling season wan inaugurated on Saturday, when the Wairere Club opened under ideal conditions. The bowling and CToque(t greens wero looking at their best, the favourable weather lately experienced enabling the preparations to be carried out without interrupton, In welcoming the visitors, the president, Mr J- Wray, expressed his appxeciation at seeing so many clubs ropresented, and hoped all would enjoy a pleasant afternoon's sport. He expresaed regret that during the year several members had been lost through death, and also that other bowlers at present wero not enjoying the best of health, but trusted that it would not be very long before they were again able to come forward and enjoy the game. He paid a tribute to the work of the retiring green supenntenden, Mr Runciman, and the present superintendent, Mr T. Rowe, and the»army of workers who had succeeded in bringing the green to such a high standard. The ladies were also eulogised for their untirjng eiforts on behalf of the club, and Mr Wray concluded by hoping that bowlers throughout the district would eujoy a most pleasant and successful season. In the play that follo'wed some very good heads were witne&sed. In the Martin — Bissell game, the Wapukurau skip gathered in a very iine 6 and this piaterially helped to defeat Bissell. In the Cooke — ltowe game the former stood at 13 for several heads and then ehalked up a 7 wl)ich practically won the game, lianveia (Bort) and Bush (Havelock North) finished 23 all, while the two Wairere fkips (Sinclair and Barr) made their totals 17 all. The two presidents (Ross, Centre, and Wray, Wairere) also staged a keen contest, the Wairere team prevailing by one point.
