LOCAL BODY MERGER
Rivers Board Opposed The amalgamation of the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board with the Hawke's Bay County Council was considered by the Rivers Board to-day to be neither feasible nor praeticabie. This opinion arose following a letter from the New Zealand Counties Assoeiation regarding the amalgamation of local bodies. Mr R. E. Talbot considered that amalgamation would not work satist'actorily among loeal bodies, whoso functions were of quite a diiferent nature. The amalgamation of two or three small county councils, whose work was moro or less id.uitical, could be done with advantage, he said. Mr W. H. Campbell said there waa no similarity between the work of the council and that of the board, and be considered that ratepayers outside the Rivers Board's area were little concerned whether the distriet wera UoOded or not. "If we took over the drainage could nearly do without the CouVcy Council, " ' said Mr J. A. Maedonald. "Yes, we could, now that the Highways Board has taken over a lot of the county work," said Mr L. E. Harris. It was deeided to reply as stated above.
