Heavy Loss of Cows in Waikato It is estimated that over 2000 dairy cows havo died in the Waikato this season from a disease that has not'yet been diagnosed/ The cOws are attacked within from 12 to 36 hours of calving, and at first appear to kave the symptoms of jnilk fever. Their hindquarters then become paralysed, and death occurs within ten days. Veterinary surgeons have been called in, but luave wlmitted that they have been baifled. One owner of a boiling-down works has handled nearly 1000 carcases of cows this season, death in over 700 cases being due to the undiagnosea epidemic. Earmers aro looking to the Agriculture Department to undertake a* tliorough scientific investigation. The loss to Waikato farmers caused by the opidemic, in the cost of replacements and the loss of butterfat, is estimated to be in the vicinity of £40,000.
