New Zealand and Canada REDUCTIONS IN DUTY

WELLINGTON, Last Night. Yarious concessions for New Zealand expotts to Canada are ineluded in an extension of the trade agreement. between the two Dominions which was negotiated in Canada recently by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. Details of the new agreement, which will remain in force until September 30, 1938, were announced last night by Mr, Nash, who said that th.e new arrangements could be regarded as most satisfactory. The agjreement was first entered into in 1932, and the origiual term was for one year. This period has since been exHnded from time to time, the last extension having been made in October of last year. The agreement was due to expxre yesterday and notice of the extension rs given in a Gazette published last night Deductions in duty agreed to by the Canadian Government are shown in the following table, which gives the former duty and the new rat-e. Another matter taken up by Mr Nash was the possibility of expanding trade with Canada in respeet to hides. These are admitted free of duty, and-a fair trade has existed for some year s. The question of increasing their - purchases of New Zealand hides -has been taken up with the Canadian tqnners. lt is hoped that, as a result,- it will be possible to increase tlds trade. The. question of providing protection .for our-own industries which liaye cqme into competition with Canadian ;goods has not ' been overlooked. Adequate power exists to.provide such protection as may be found necessary.
