BOY STAR'S SALARY
Witli the announcement by Freddie Bartholomew's aunt that she has "practically decided 'to withdraw Freddie from the movics" comes the news that the British boy film star has: received the award of the National Screen Council for the best- acting of the month. His performance in "Captains Courageous" ha3 won for Freddie this dis•tihction. , |, Miss Millicent Bartkolomew, Freddie' s aunt and guardian, has just resumed her battle with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, to whom the boy is under contract. She demands that his" salary be in creased from £220 a week to £d00, but the film company appears to be steadfast in refusiug to pay more than £400 a week. "I want to stay in pictures," Freddie Bartholomew saici when liis aiint, Miss Millicent Bartholomew, told him of a cable she had recemed from 1ns grandparents in London, asking hcr to hring the boy film1' star horui' at once. The company took "disciplmary action" against Freddie when ijc failed to answer studio calls for wort 011 1 "1-horoughbreds Don't Cry" by starring another boy— Ra Hould, the New Zealander — in his place. After Freddie's success in "Captains Courageous," his lawyer, Colone.' Niblett, presented a claim for tht> salary increase. Metro-Goldwyn-Maye/ offered £500 a week, hut negotiationa broke down.
