EMIL JANNINGS IN GERMAN FILMS
Announcing their programmes for 1937-38, the Big Three German fil'm companies — Tobis, IJfa, and Terra — promise release of over one hundred fuJl-length iilms. A few of them will be made abroad — in Vienna, Rome, Paris, and the TTnited State. "While a certain number of films will be of an "ethical and natioual character," to fullil Propaganrla Ministry demands, there will be a good mixture of musical, dramatic, criminaJ. and comedy lilms. Besides paying his fam'ous stage role. of Ihe village magistrate in the German cJassic, KJeist's "The Broken Jug," Emil Jannings will also appear as Oanton in George Buchner's "The Death of Dantou-" Gustav Grundgens is to transfer his stage success, Shakespeare 7s "As You Like It," to the screen, and will appear in "Debureau," a story dealing with the great Erench actor of tho early nineteenth century. Willi Eorst will direct "The Firsi Wife," adapted from a Theodore Storm novel, and "Bel Ami" by Guy de Maupassant. Turning to the musical side, there will be screen versions of Johann Stauss's "The Bat" and Lehar's "Tho land of JLaughter. " Marta Eggertli and Jau Kiepura, her husband, both great favourites in Germany, will sing m Lehar's operetta. Benjamin Gigli and Michael Bohnen will oembine .torees fe. "Mother Loato " Impressed by the phenomen&l sueces" 1 of "Broadway Melody" in Germany, a Berlin dircctor is to ti-y his hand at . "The Stars are Alight," a iiini revue, which promises to rival the Hollywooil praduction. Zarah Leander, the Swedish aetress, is to' appear in three lilms, while Lidw Baateva, the Prague-born star, will be seen m a Beethoven film, "The Imrnortal Beloved. " Paula Wessely is to appear in two lilms, while Lilian Harvey remams one of Ufa's favourite stars. "Storm Flight to Claudia" is intendcd to rouse interest in German civii aviation,
