September Weather. A total of 2.51 inches of rain was recorded in Waipukurau during September. There were 15 wet days, the heaviest fall being .97 inches on September 4. Last year September had 10 wet days, the total .for the month being 1.62 inches. • The total for the nine months of 1937 is 18.3 inches as compared with 29.59 inches for the same period in 1936i About the same number' of frosts'' was' recorded iu September this year as in September 1936. J Napier Artists at Waipawa. In 'the Municipal Concert Hall, Waipawa, the Masonic Lodge held its annual • '■ 'ladies'" night." Viistors were present from all parts of the province, the hall being lilled to capacity. A delightful concert programme was presented, to which a number of Napier artists contributed, comprising the quartette party (Messrs Stevenson, Thompson, Peake and Hill), Mr and' Mrs Stevenson (songs -^nd duets), and Mr Drummond (violin solos). Songs were' also , given by Miss A. Collins (Otane) and- Mrs G. Knobloeh, elocutionary items by Miss Jean McKay, and Scottish stories by Mr Robertson (Hastings). After sup'per the remainder of the evening was devoted to dancing to musie provided by the Napier Buff Orchestra. Rugby; Makotuku v. Ormondville. Football and basketball matckes wer^ : piayed recently between pnpils of the Makotuku and Ormondville schools. Tho football match was conteste.d oh the domain. in tho presence of a large number of. -spectators. The teams were evenly matched and entered into the spirit of the game. During tho hrst spell R, Roil, a member of the Ormondville... team, scpred a try which was not converted. A second try was scored by Keith Lang, who ad-ded the major points. No further scoring took place, and the game ended: Makotuku 8) Ormondville nil. Mr Percy Berkahn ;efereed. Basketball between tbo girls was piayed on the school grounds, where the players were not so evenly matched as in the football contest, the Makotuku girls winning by 24 goals to two. Scorers for the winners were Grace Luscombe, Sylvia Clark. and Eunice Anderson. Miss Gaze acted as referee. After the games both the visiting teams were entertained to afternoon tea at the school. Gift Day at Sanatorium. Yesterday was Waipawa 's bi-monthly visiting day at the Pukeora Sanatorium, cars being provided by Misses Jull and M. Wills. The following gifts are acknowledged: — Mrs White, butter and eggs; Mr Downer and Mrs Annand, magazines; Mrs McLean and Mrs Davy. fruit and chocolates; Williams and Kettle, sweets; Mrs Carlson, spaghetti; Mrs G. Hunt, biscuits; Mrs K. B. Gollan and Mrs Perry, tinned fruit; Mrs C. Pattison, salmon; Mrs J. Bibby, sheep tongues; Miss McHardy, tomatoes; Mrs Bibby and Miss Bibby, cake; Miss Jull, custard; Red Cross, oranges; Mrs D. H. Edwards, Mrs Strang, Mrs H. Collett and Miss Moroney, cakes; Misses Collett, biscuits; Mrs MacPherson and Mrs C. Donghi, cakes; Mrs Pepperell, sponge, chocolates, short cake, books and papers; Mrs Fox, cake; Mrs Logan, fruit> Radio at Waipukurau School. Work has been begun on the installation at the Waipukurau Primary School of a radio system, consisting of a central pick-up and seven independent speakers. capable of serving all or any of the classroomB. When the installation is completed, the committee will consider fitting up a microphone in the headmaster 's room to enable him- to address the whole school at one time without a special assembly. It is anticipated that tho contractor for the erection of the new primary school at Waipawa will make a start early nest week.
