.MASTEETON, Last Night. The appointment of the principal ano staffi of the new Wairarapa College was afinounced by the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board to-night, the principsu being Mr. G, G. Hancox, M.A., B.Sc., at present principal of the Palmerston North Technical School. j All permanent members of fhe teach- ! ing staffa ,of the Masterton Technical School and ihe Wairaraim High School, the two schoole being combiaed to form tho Wairarapa College, have been »p-, pointed to the staff of the new school. Mr. Hancox rcceiveu his priinary anu j secondary school education at tho Te- ! muka District High School, and lator J s.erved as a pupil ieacher at ihe same j school for three years prioi: to atteuding the Christchurch 'i'raining College ! as a student, On leaving the Trainiug j College he received au appolntment as ! aspistant teacher at ihe Fendalton ! Public School, Christchurch, but removed to Blenheim in 1914, having been appointed science inaster at thu Marlborough High School. His asso> ciation with that school was broken by his enlisting for gener&l service witn the N.Z.E.F., .departing from ihe Domiuiou .early in 1916. , When serving as a second lieutenant be .was severciy wounded at ihe first battle 6f the Sonime, being invalided back to. N.ew ZealandF .The nature of his. wax injury prevented Mr, Hancox from xe-enteri'Ug the teaching profession immediately, but on recovering sufiiciently he was • appointed headmaster at. the Annat School, North Canterbury. Two years later he went south to Dunedin to tako Up the position of first assistdnt and senior house master at the John McGlashan College and remained there for three years. In 1922 he receivod his appointment of assistant master at the Palmerston North Boys ' High School, but two years later be took up .the position of director of tbe Palmerston , North .Technical School. During the 13 years Mr. Hancox filled the position of director, the Technical School materially widened its activities, its growth being evidenced by the fact .that when he' asEumed ; charge the weekly hour enrolments totalled 2557, whereas at the close of last yeaf the enrolments had grown to 16,236. In recognition of the great advance made by ,the school, it was raised .td the status of a technical high school in 1934 by the Education Department, while the buildings have hod to be considerably enlarged.
