Furious Japanese Attack Gains Little Ground (Eeceived 30, 1.15 p.m.)' SHANGHAI, Sept. 29. The heaviest fighting to date is now proceeding at Shanghai, where the Japanese to-day launehed a furious offensive against two points of the Chinese lines. The whole front to-night is enshrouded inN smoke. The Japanese heavy artillery kept up a terrific barrage all day. The barrage showed a steady Japanese encroachment in the Lotien sector, while at Chapei bluejackets followed up the bombing o£ 20 warplanes with infiltration' advances into streets near the northern border of the International Settlement, where the British hold blockhouses separated from the fighting area by only a few feet. Late to-night a Japanese naval detachment stormed and took the Pantheon theatre, near the North Station. There is still no sign of a break through the Chinese lines, though sliglit advances have been made in places.
