HEAVIEST FIGHTING YET ON THE SHANGHAI FRONT
Furious Japanese Attack Gains Little Ground (Eeceived 30, 1.15 p.m.)' SHANGHAI, Sept. 29. The heaviest fighting to date is now proceeding at Shanghai, where the Japanese to-day launehed a furious offensive against two points of the Chinese lines. The whole front to-night is enshrouded inN smoke. The Japanese heavy artillery kept up a terrific barrage all day. The barrage showed a steady Japanese encroachment in the Lotien sector, while at Chapei bluejackets followed up the bombing o£ 20 warplanes with infiltration' advances into streets near the northern border of the International Settlement, where the British hold blockhouses separated from the fighting area by only a few feet. Late to-night a Japanese naval detachment stormed and took the Pantheon theatre, near the North Station. There is still no sign of a break through the Chinese lines, though sliglit advances have been made in places.
