HORTICULTURE SOCIETY

Three Addresses in Napier The oightli of the present series of monthly talks arranged by tho Napier Horticultural Society was helcf last evening. in the absence of Mr C. D. Wilson, the meeting was presided over by Mr C. J. Baglev. There was an attendance of 43 members and friends'. After the general business had been transacted the Gladioli competition was held, this being won by Mrs E. Cornford, with Mr J. W. Olphert second. The first speaker for the evening was Mr Flewellyn King, of the Greenmeadows Fruit Farm, who gave a most enjoyable and informative talk on "Becent, Developments in the Fruit Industry." Mr King gave examples of novelties in fruit from America, ltussia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. The latest methods of grafting were also oxplained and demonstrated. The next talk was by Mr B. G. Wilton, who chose "Yiolet Growing" as liis subject. The time to plant, varieties to grow, and their treatment were explained, and a practical demonstration of the mothod of planting was given. Mr B. Lynn was the third speaker, and he spoke on "The Propagation and Cultivation of Dahlias." The various stages of cultivation were given, and with the aid of specimens" the speaker showed clearly just what methods he used to obtain the best results. At. the oonclusion of tho talks the speakprs wero accordod a very hearty vote of thanks. The special monthly flower competitions resulted ns follows: Best bloom, Mrs R. Holt 1, Mr R. G. WiJsou 2, Mrs Oxford 3. Best vase of flowers: kfr R. W. Wilson 1, Mrs W. P. Mitchell 2, Mr,s M. H. Oxford 3. The following new members were duly elected to the" society: Mesdanies M. E. Grant, Mercer, McClurg, L. , Clark, Miso M. Grant, Mr A. E.'Giloa.
