(Received ?8? 8.45 a.m.) §HANGHAI, Sept. 27. ' Japanese bombers dropped a dozen 6001b. bombs-r^-the. largest yct — near the North Station to-day. The explosions rocked tlie cntirq city of Shanghai. The Japanese claim , that three raids on Nanking to-day destroyed the snlphuric-^cid plant and damaged an aeroplane works which has British affilialions. It is stated that np to the present 7563 Chinese civilians have been killed in air-raids, and that 87 cities and towns have been afctacked. The Japanese spokesman, however, eontends that this total is exaggerated. Nmnerous Japanese bombers, f lying amid a barrage from imti-aircraft guns, raided Canton at 9.15 o'cloqk this morning. Thr.ee bombs landed on tlie W ongaha railway station, which is the termjnus for the Ganton-Hankow l|ne. The station buildings are blazing furiously. The Tokio correspondent of The Thnes states "The Japanese Press provide an answer to-the ruthless bombing of Nanking, which is regarded as the focus point of the Chinese defences. "The newspapers gay that if the Administrat|on were physioally destroyed and the Government driven out, the fragile Chinese unity might rapidly disintegrate. Japan's task wquld then be limplified. Such a result would be worth the risk of foreign complications." The Shanghai correspondent of The Times reports that the yecent air-raids have given the elegant city of Nanking a ghastly appearance, bnt the scientific dug-outs have weathered the storm, and the equanimity of the Government is not disturbed.
