Rotarian H. E. Edgley was yesterday elected secretary of the Napier Rotary Club, in succession to RQtarian R. M, Chadwick. Mr Hugh W. C. Baxrd, president of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, and Mrs Baird returned to Hastings during the week-end after three weeks' holiday at Rotorua, Elying-Officer W. L. Collett arriyed lrom Sydney by the Awatea tQ visit his txome in Poverty Bay. He is on foxir uionths ' leave of ahsence from service with the Royal Air Force in Egypt. Paymaster-Commander E, L. Tottenham, secretary to the New Zealand Naval Board, has been granted the temporary rank pf paymaater-captain while holding his present appointment. Dr. J. E. Qiesen, of Dannevirke, who left New Zealand as a ship's surgeon in the Mamari, is now studying surgery and gynaecology at Guy's, London, and may later go to Edinlxurgh. Mr Gilbert Archey, director of the Auckland War Memorial Musoum, who is at present visiting overseas museums under a Carnegie Corporation grant will return to Auckland by tho Monterey on January 21, after spending a fortnight at Honolulu with Dr. Peter Buck, director of the Bishop Museura. Mr Archey is now touring English and Continental museums, and will leave England for New York on Oetober 13. Prov. Grand Master P. W. Stabb, who presided at the half-yearly meeting of the Otago Distriet, M.U.I.O.O.P., acted in that capacity for the second time during his association with the order. This is a distinction that has been enjoyed by a member only once previously since the formation of the society in Otago in 1848. That occurred only a few months after the settlement of the provinco.
