Mr Cordell Hull, Hecretary of State, to-day received representatives of the P.'.ess and discussed the situation ia Ghina Mt Hull declined to commont on the request made by Marshal Ghiang Kai* shek, that the United States should come to China's aid, or the European suggeetion of the invocation of the Nine-Power Treaty. Mr Hull said, kowever, that tho United States wOuld not join with Britajn in her protest against the bombing of Canton Ho added that the feeliug expressed in the Axnerican protest on YVednesday was aufficiently strong to cover the situation. The Kew York Herald-Tribune to-day pubhshes an editorial on the diuo Japanese conflict. Contendiug that the invocation of the Fine Power Treaty would be useless, the paper declares that Japan has earned the scarn and contempt of the civilised world for her insensate brutalities againBt China, The editorial goes on to Btate:— - "The tragedy is that the great world Powers are not prepared to fight Japan in order to save China, which ia at tho mercy of a most ruthless iuvader. "China's proteet agahiBt her botrayal is understandable, but it is out of the question that America should do anjK thing undor the Nine-Power Treaty.'*
