The Farmer Pays
FAIR PLAY.
Sir,— Like other farmers I have received my rate demand from the Waipukurau County Council andiit shows a very large increase in the last two years, principally caused by the hospital and harbour board demands. The rate note explains- that out of overy one pound (£1) the council takes 13/2, hospital 4/2, harbour 2/8. It has always seenled rather 'unjust that the f arm.er should have ■ to pay so much cnore than the town dweller. The, professional man, be he doctor, dentist, etc., only pays on his private house or section or perhaps rooms aiid the highly-paid company manager and others get ofl? equally lightly. The fariner pays income tax, land tax, unemployme'nt tax,-rabbit tax and now the harbour boayd is demanding more money after throwing so many thousands into the sea. Why the farmer should have to pay so much more than. other people using the harbour and hospitals I cannot understand and. seems a question that the Farmers' Union should take up vigQrously. — Yours, etc..
