"The most wanton massacre of our age.*' This is how the Daily Herald, the London Labour daily, in a leading article, describeB the bombing of - Canton, where thousands have been killed. The journal says: — "A world which is shocked at the Japanese savagery is making that savagery possible — by selling to Japan essential raw materials of war, and by buying from Japan, and sn helping to finance the war. It is on foreign soil that tho Japanese aeroplanes are flying as they carry out the destruction of the Chinese cities. While this is so, the nations supplying raw materials to Japan cannot escape the cliarge of acting as accessories." 'lIt may be said that economic sauetions are impraoticable, but the vltal thing is that the Powers should ineet and decide together what can be done." The Daily Mail says: "Now that the nations Bee a modern bombing aeropiane in action they are aghast at the weapbn each of them holds in its hand. Humanity is asking afresh what can be dofie to avert it.1' The News - Chroniele deblares: "China 's agony to-day will be Europe's to-mbrrow, unlbss we bestir ourselves to stbp it. China 's hell is the world 's op* pbrtunity. Indiscriminate bbmbing from the air can, and must, be stopped."
