STATE HOUSES
Modern Fittings and Style
DETAILS OF INTERIORS Finishing touclies on 15 of the homes being erected at Orakei, Auckland, under the State scheme have now been commenced, and it is. hoped to have them completed by the end of the month. One or two of the houseis are in a more advanced stage of construction than the rest, but none is yet finished, tbe electrical fittings remaining to be added even in those nearest to completion. 5 As far as may be judged from the homes which will be completed first, a • high standard of interior finish has been set. Fittings, without being elaborate, are of pleasing, modern design, and liberal use of tiles, terrazo, and qhromium lends an. up-to-date effect, particularly to the kitchens. Typical of the style of finish to be adopted is that of one house that is almost ready for occupation. The wallpapers and interior tinting are notably effective, a pleasant cream sliade for the ceilings blending perfectly with papers embodying subdued autumn colourS, Doors in dark woods are in effeotive contrast wi,th the lightercoloured walls and ceilings, and the becfrooms espdcially lend themselves to tasteful effects in furnishing. Contrasts in Colours. Slightly darker tones are blended in the living room wallpaper. There is a brick fireplace, with wooden mantel and fciled hearth, and the room, being geh-' erously provided with windows, aiready conveys a cheerful impression. Suitable furniture would transform it. into a comfortable room, bright and airy. Utility has been combined with pleas« ing appearance in the kitchen. The bench-top is of fawn-coloured terrazzo, with an up-swept back, and a large sink neatly in-set. Several rows of cupboards, bins and drawers, all built in, provide ample storage space for foodstuffs, and in one corner is the hot water cupboard, with a large drying cupboardi immediately above it. An electrie stove is conveniently placed, g and on the other side of the room is a - tiled open fireplace. Drawers and bins have chromium-plated handles, and the whole room, from floor to ceiling, is finished in pale pink. Work For Electricians. i | Blue is the colour scheme in the bathj room. There is a large porcelain bath, I low-set in the modern style, and other l fittings include a mirror-fronted medij cine cabinet, flush with the wall. Although the electrical fittings are not yet installed, the wiring has been done, and there is a generous oumber of light and power points. The latest type of switches and lamps is to be fitted, in keeping with the general design. l^evelling was commenced last week o® the site on which a school is to be erected, immediately to the west of the first block of liouses. The area which is to be the football field has been ploughed, and a gang of Publio Works ; Department employees is removing the j spoil and building Up a lower part of ! the prop^fty.
