GERMAN PLANES SHOT DOWN

(Received 24 1.0 p.m.) VALENCIA, Sept. 23. Loyalists advancing on the Aragon front surrounded tlie heavily-fortified San Pedro hermitage. The defenders surrendered. Several villages were captured after fierce fighting, including the strategic Las Cucuyas. Three insurasnt Junkers planes 5 were shot down on the Aragon front. They contained the bodies of some of the best German pilots and also the "VVhite Russian aee, Manewski, who served in the German Air Force, and wore the Russian Imperial Eagle on his sleeve. The Republican pilots responsible for the shooting-down of the Junkers have been promoted. The Loyalists are bombarding Oviedo and Salamanca. The working-class quarters in Madrid were heavily shelled to-night. The Republican batteries silenced the rebel guns after an.hour's duel. The Loyalists shelled Toledo and set fire to armaments factories. Baron von Stohrer, the new German Ambassador, presented his credentials to General Franco. He said that Germany expected the fighting to end soon in a definite Nationalist triumph.
