272 Chinese Planes Destroyed WAR IN THE AIR (Eeceived 24, 1.25 p.m.) TOKIO, Sept. 23. The Navy Office. in a statement lssued on aerial damage in Nanking and Canton between September 19 and 22, eomputes that the Japanese for certain shot down 40 Chinese planes at Nanking and says that the fate of two others .was doubtful. Ten planes were destroyed on the ground, while the fate of seven others was not yet known. The Japanese claim that between August 14 and September 22 toey deotroyed 272 Chinese planes, and that in addition the fate of 12 others is doubtful. The Japanese Navy lost 31 fiianea: up to September 22.
