Progress Leagqe's Proposals Outlined
FUNDS FOR SPORTS The promotion of a Queen Carnival from October 20 to December 4, terminatlng with a Carnival Week in Hastings, has been decided upon by the Hastings and Distriet Progress League. The main objeetive of the campaign on this oecasion is to gjive assistance to the sports organisations in the town, and the league will use the major portion of the profits from the carnival to cffecting improvements in the proposed new sports grouud. Carnival Weelc will commenee on Sfaturday, November 27, with an official openiug in the Municipal Theatre, where the Queen candidates will be given "the freedom of the city." During the ensuing week there will be a monster gymkhana and a special gala sports meeting, and on the final night there will be a masked ball, during which the fmal voting for the queens will be recorded. The league is now circularising the various sports and social organisations iu the borough soliciting nominations and their support to the campaign. Eaeh organisation entering a candidate for the Queen Carnival will receive 50 per cent. of the money it raises, and the remaining 50 per cent. will' go to the league, which undertakcs that the major portion of its proceeds shall be devoted to the proposed new sports grounds. The league is making application for permission to kold an art union, and if successful it is proposed that tho ticlcets for this art- union will constl tute the votes for the queen candidates. It is proposed to hold a preliminary meeting of those interested on October 7, and to close nominations for queen candidates on October 15, During Carnival Week, from November 27 to December 4, it is proposedi to arrange processions through the streets on Mouday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, and have side-shows and stalls in Railway "road. throughout the whole week. Application is to be made to the Hastings Borough Council to assist in decorating the town along modified lines of the Coronation scheme of decoration. The assistance and cooperation of the business people is to be sought in the matter of shop deeorations and special window displays. and in the conduct of a "spotting" competition. The gymkhana will be held at the Hastings racecourse on tlie Wednesday. It is hoped to provide entertainment in the form of steer-riding, a polo match. draught-horse race, wrestling on horses, a drag hunt and special horse events for children. The foilowing day there will be a gala afternoon and garden fete at Windsor Park, with the two bands, the Hastings Citizens' and the Highland Pipers, in attendance. Highland dancing, Father Neptune Oourt, swimming, and canoe-racing will be amoug the attractions, and in addition there will be scores of competitions and novelty events. The Queen Carnival committees will have every opportunity of increasmg their voting strength by conducting stalls and competitions. The Boy Scout movement is to be assisted during the carnival to the extent that the Scouts are to be invited to dispose of a massive iced cake, the proceeds of which will be exclusivcly devoted to the Scout movement..
