PLAY IN THE WIND Tht Hastings ladies' open golf championship was won by Miss Molly Jeffeid (Hastings), who defeated Mrs D. Wilson (Lower Hutt), by 3 and 1 in tio nal over eightecn holes, Play was •i ade uupleasant by a strong soutkerJy wind with occasional rain. Miss Jefierd was particularly effective with her irons, through the fairway, playing lo.-n., low, boring shots into the wind. 1 first and second holes were won by Miss Jefierd aiter equal play by both to the greeus. Mrs Wilson played a beautiful iron shot to the green at thc third that gave her the advantage and won the hole. At the short fourth Mibs Jefferd lound the green with her mashie, but Mrs Wilson mishit hers and then found a bunker which she failed to clsar with her next, conceding the hole. The fii'th was halved in fours and also the sixth whera Miss Jefferd holed a 12-toob putt. The seventh was evenly p|ayed, though Mrs Wilson had to negdtiate a bunker to reach the greon with her third. Two putts each for a half in lives. Mrs Wilson won the eleventh after a splendid long iron to the green and the twelfth was halved in fours. Mrs Wilson then won the thirteenth three to five, and reduced the margin to three down, after Miss Jefferd had found a bunker. The fourteenth was won by Mrs Wilson after steady play four to fiv 0 Miss Jefferd being through the green with her second. Miss Jefferd two up and four to play. At the fifteenth Mrs Wilson pushed her drive into the rough and was in the rough over the drain with her second and stxll short of the green with \ the third. Miss Jefferd was on the 1 green with her second and down m | two putts and won the hole four to J five and placed the match dorniy three | in lier favour. Jefferd won the championship cup last year and was heartily congratulated on her successful defence of her title against two brilliant piayers in Miss Heleau^ and Mrs D.
