Struck by Engine at Crossing

AUCKLAND, Last Night. While beiug driven over the Mangere raihvay crossing late this afteruoon, nine cows- were struck by the engine of tho Frankton train and killed. A bull which was also struck was seriously injured and may have to be destroyed. The owner of the cattle estimates his loss at £70. The cows were among a herd of 40 vvhicih were being driven from the Westfield stock yards to a gjrazing paddock in tlie Mangere district, Moilt of the cattle' had crossed the line, those caught by the train being among the last of the drove. Tlie nine cows were killed instantly and their carcases were strewu over the crossing past the cattle stops and some distance along tbe line.
