Gold Rod, Ajax and Talking Win ROSEHILL MEETING

(By Telegraph-

-Copyrisbt.)

SYDNEY, Sept. 19. • The favourites, Gold Rod, Ajax and Talking, shone at Rosehill on Saturday. The weather was hot and there was •> gusty wind' blowing. Gold Rod won the Camellia Stakes in a manner fairly satisfying his Epsom supporters. Although hard pressed by Hamurah, he came away in the last 100 yards to win by two lengths. Francis Drake, having his first outing since his arrival from New Zealand, xant only moderately, as did Country farty and Genetout, while King's Head reatly disappointed. Aiabia, on the other hand, threatened serious danger. Ajax, who fulfilled expectations up to the hilt to beat the strong finisher, Caesar, by two lengths in the Rosehill Guineas, gave his backers a thrill at the top of the straight, where Caesar caught him, bu'fc the challesge was short lived, for the Yictorian colt retrieved the lead and was going xight away at the finish. He is bound to monopolise attention in Melbourne Cup diseussions. The Spring Handicap was won by Gay Knight, but it afforded no guide to the Metropolitan owing to the muddling pace. The Hill Stakes was won all the way by Talking,' but it revealed the good quality of the Vic'torian, Avenger, who came from a long way back to finish second full of runuing. Avenger, according to .turf critics, looks to have a' strong claim in the A.J.C. Derby. The New Zeaiander, Courtcraft, owiied by Mr W. H. Gaisf ord, of Oringi, who finished sixth, ran a fair race and he is expected to improve. The romance of St. ConStant's. irin in the second division of the Highwejght Handicap to-day is that Alan Cooper early this month sold St. Constant to J. Cook foT 20s "because he was f ed up with him. " The Yictorian colt Hua, was given. an exhibition gailop with Silver Standard after the Guineas to-day ahd the large crowd was greatly .' interested • in the . Victorian crack, who won by about half a iength over a anile and a-quarter. The stewards inquired into trouble at the barrier in the Hill Stakes when Avenger, Only One, Courtcraft and Allunga " met serious interference ' and Allunga's rump was damaged through coming into contact with the rails. The New Zealand jockey, Atkins, told the stewards that Courtcraft had been hampered by Allunga, but the stewards found it impossible to say who waa at fault. The Sydney Sun states that Mi Cooper intends to send talking and Maia to the United States in the event of their winning the Epsom and Metropolitan douhle. - Their objective will ba the Santa Anita Handicap, with 100,000 dollars. ; Resiilts: — , j HURDLE RACE, of £150; li miles.
