Te Mata Peak Job
"^AYYY.'i
Sir - Methinks the present hold-up hy some workers provides excellent ma.terial to make bullets for the Opposition to liurl at the Gqyernment in its effort to make conditions better for the work.. How much longer are the fcotions of some men to he toleratsdP A certain number of men have been balloted for work on Te Mata Peak road. Certainly it is an arduous task to reach the summit, but the work has been provided and a good . wage has been offerid. Are sensible men going t-o turn. down a gjood ' thing ? Jf those selected in the first ballot fhil to turn up to do the work, try another. Working on the river jobs some time ago we had to find our own transport and wages were only 10/- per day and from 2/6 to 4/- per week was charged to defray cost of transit. Surely ways and means could be found for overcoming the present deadlock. My advice to men is to be caref ul ; ' do not kill the gpose that laya the golden egg. The Government may withdraw the suBsidy. Both men and tradespeople would he the poorer if such did happen. Do not hamper thos# who have the workers' interests at heart. — Yours, etc.,
Hastings, Sept. 17, 1397.
