String Group of B.M.S- Entertains WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Members of the Oentral Hawke 's Bay branch of the British Music Society spent a most enjoyable evening yesterday at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. G. Windle, Porangahau road, Waipukurau, when a deliglrtful programme f eaturing the works of Joseph Haydn was presentde by the string group. The programme opened with the items from the Adagio from Haydn 's famous Emperor quartet played by string group members. In a short interesting talk on the composer, Mr. H. S. Cottrell briefly sketched Haydn 's life and work. Born just over 200 years ago, Haydn was regarded as father of instrumental and orchestral musie, as we know it to-day. His compositions numbering over 1000 were invariably tuneful and bright, reflecting the sunny pe?sonality of this musical genius. An interesting feature of the programme was the presentation of Haydn 's "Joy Symphony" conducted by Mr P. C. Anderson. In this number the string group was assisted by members of the choral group. The players were: — Violins, Messrs J. C. Windle,. R. ' M. Scott and A. O. Pitt; cello, Mrs A. 0. Pitt and Mr H. S. Gottrell; piano, Mrs. F. V. Ward; cueltoo, Mrs. E. G. Dowrick; nightingal", Mrs. H. D. Clark; rattle, Miss B. Bryce; castanets, Miss B. Kerr; tamborine, Mr. S. G. Gottrell; cymb«ls and quail, Miss II. Johnstone; triangW, Mrs. N. Tate; trumpet, Mrs. II. S. Cottrell; jbells, Mrs. W. E. Hopkinson; drum, Mr. V. Parsons. The following naydn compositions were contributed: — Pianoforte solo, Largo and Presto from Sonata in D Major, Mrs. P. 0. Anderson; Adagio from Sonata in E Minor, Miss H. Johnstone; Fragment from Sonata in C Sharp Minor, and Alligio, Miss V. M. Witherow; pianoforte vduet, Minuet from the "Military Symphony,,, Mrs. P. C. Anderson and Miss II. Johnston; voeal solo, "My Mother Bids Me Bind M> Hair, ' ' Mrs. W. G. Gray; string trios, Allegro from Trio No. 31 and "Gipsy Ponds," Mrs. J. O. Windle (violin), Mr. H. S. Cottrell ('cello), and Mrs. F. V. Ward (piano). The following selected items, as well as compositions of Joseph Haydn, wero contributed to the programme: — 'Cello soli, "Priere" (Squire) and "Ave Veruni" (Mozart), Mrs. A. C. Pitt; vocal soli, "A Wild Rose" (Schubert), Mrs. W. J. Gray, "Simon the Cellerer" (Hatton), "Friar of Orders Gray," Mr. E. T. Haldane; "Creole Lovo Song" (Moncrjef), c' A Jug of This" (Traditional), Mr. E. G. Collin. Piano- . forte accompaniments were played by Mesdames F. V. Ward, II. S. Cottrell and P. O. Anderson. As a diversion from the more serious musical studies a Central Hawke 's Bay mussieians' portrait competition provided a good deal of amusement. The prize was won by Mrs. H. D. Clark. At the conclusion of a very enjoyable musical evening a delicious supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames J. C. Windle and H. S. Cottrell. As well as those contributing to the programme, Mesdames E. G. Collin, B. Grosvenor, T. Power, J. L. Brathwaite, V. Parsons, Aliss P. Parsons, Messrs. R. Power and F. V. Ward were also present.
