Miss Rixon, who has been holidaying at the Cliateau, lias returned to Hastings. Sir Henry aud Lady Brackenbury, of London, are visitiug Hawke 's Bay and are the guests of Dr. aud Mrs Caahmore, Hastings. Mr W. D. Manning, of Stratford, and formerly of Napier, is revisiting Napier on his annual leave Mr G. A. Dunlop, of Hastings, is acting as manager of the Dannevirke Municipal Abbattoir, in place of Mr -F. Stewart, who is on annual leave. Mr W. A. B. Goodwin, M.A., D.E., who has been headmaster for six aud a-lialf years of th© Te Rehunga School, has been appointed to the Mohaka School. He will begin his new duties ou October 8. Lieutenant-Coinuiander A. D. Holden. R.N.R., chief ofiicer of the Goverument inotor-ship Maui Pomare, has been appointed to H.M.S. Endeavour, which 19 at present carrying out survey work in the Hauraki Gulf. Mr. W. B. Cunninghain, manager of the Dunedin branch of the Union Steam Ship Company of Now Zealand, Ltd., has been transferred to Timaru, His place will be taken by Mr. H. H. Dobie, manager of the Timaru branch. Mr. C. F. Jones, formerly of Christchurch, manager of the Oamaru branch of the Farm Accounting Association of New Zealand. and the Otago Farmers' Union Mutual Fire Insurance Association, has been axxpointed secretary to the "Waitaki Electrie Power Board. A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr W. J. Pallot was passed yesterday by the Hawke 's Bay Electric Power. The chairman, Mr T. E. Crosse, spoke of Mr Pallot 's estimable qnalities, and members stood in sil;V'0 as a mark of respect. ?! Engineer-Commander W. H. TuyJorYoung, of H.M.S. Achilles, senior engineer ofiiccr on tho New Zealand sta tion, left Auckland by the Maetsuycker for. thc East to-day. He will joiu the liner Johan de Witt at Singapore to continue his voyage to Southampton. Epginecr-Commander Taylor-Young will be accompanied by his wife. Mr. Carson Shea, who for some time was manager of the State Theatre, Hastings, has been appointed mamager of the Majestie Theatre, Invercargill, in succession to Mr. Errol Fuller, who is going to the State Theatre, Dunedin. Mr. Tano Faina, who for some years has been manager of the State Theatre, Dunedin, is to takc over the management of the Civic Theatre, Invercargill.
j Dr. R. M. Barrer, Ph.D., Cambridge, son of Mr T. R. Barrer, Masterton, wTho was recently awartled the degree of D.Sc. (N.Z.), has received a further distinction, having been elected a Fellow of Clare College, a fellowship tenable for tliree years. He intends to continue his research work at Cambridge in spite of having been offered important posts both in London and abroad. Dr. Barrer '& ressarch work has receivetj. signal praise in a new book from th^ Oxford University Press, "The Mechanism of Oontact Catcalysis, ' ' by R, H. Griffith.
