Work on Roads and Bridges During Month REPORT OF ENG1NEER . , WAIKAWA, Last Night. The following is the reporfc presented by the county engineer, Mr V. E. Douglas, presented to the montlily iBeeting of the Waipawa County Council yesterday. — Waipawa Riding; — A considerable amounif of drain-oleaning was carried out. Knight's drain on the Argyll road was' cleared, the drains by Butler's and Moorhead5s on Butler's road wero attended to, and the wh'ole drainage on the flats near Houston's on the Makarora road was improved as far as possible. — Cr Butler asked for a report on giving inetalled access on Lyall street, Tikokino, between Mantell street and Sedgwick street. The cost would be 4pproximateiy- £10. Grading, patchinu and general maintenance was also carried out. Grading, patching and general maintenance was done in the Ongaonga riding, during which the Patangata road was scarified and regraded. Clinton Riding : — Grading general maintenance fond metallihg work. A considerable amount of work was carried out in this riding during the mog,tli, the following work being attended toj Severinsen's road, Eastwood road, Black's road, Mill road, South Makaretu road, Wilson's Cutting. Severinsen's road has been completed and the hill on Black's road practically completedi¥« It has not been possible to proceed. with this work during the wet weather. Grading was completed - on Mill road, Milne's road, Clinton School road, and Wilson's Cutting road. Work has been commenced on Clinton-Bher-wood road. I have mspected the narrow portion of this road and will attempt to widen some portions with thp horse grader. The larger cutting could be widened as opportunity offered for about £20. Main Bridges Jfietcher's Crossing Bridge : Proposals have beeii submitted to the Publio Works Department for consideration, Mill Road (Clinton) Retaining Wall: This work has been completed by day work at a total cost of £89 18/10 against a'n estimate of £86 12/-, and the lowest tender of £134 13/4. Cotincil were Well advised in.deciding to rc~ fuse to accept any tender. Annual Overhaul In accordance with the usual praetise a list of bridges for overhaul is now being commenced. The following bridges were dealt with during this month: — Makarora Bridge, 14 declting planks installed ; Waltcrs Bridge, 13 decking planks. ' Contracts for Sealing Cliips : — A committee of the council opened tendera for contracts for supply of sealing chips to the Waipawa-Pourerere, WaipawaUngaonga at Waipawa, Waipawa- Onga at Ruataniwha, and Fernhill Takapau at Tikokino respectively. Tkey recommended that the first three contracts be awarded to W. J. Maillder and that no tender be gccepted for the latter, but that the council should crush the chips with their own crusher. The Main Highways Board have approved Contract for metalling the Waipuku-rau-Mataniau main highway between Takapau and Kopua was called at the sarne timo as the above, and the acceptance of H. Andrews tender was recommended. The Main Highways Board have approved General Flood Damage: — Asheott-Waipukn ■ rau road: The Tukipo river has cut in badly towards the road during tho rain of the last fortnight. The river undermined the road fence on Tuesday, September 7, and an attempt is being made to protect the road from further erosion. This work is, however, purely temporary in nature. The training oi the streaiii away from the road will he an expensive and difficult operation and the whole question requires careful consideration. Traffic Tally : — At the request of the Main Highways Board a traffic tally over 16 hours a day was maintained for a week at tkreo points in the county. Tho whole cost is being borne by the Main Highways Board. Tools and Plant : — Crusher : Very little work has been possible for the •past fortnight on. account of flood in the river and rain. It is now proposed to re-erect the crusher at tho Waipawa Bridge on tlie Onga-Tikokino road to turn out chips for use in sealing tliroitgh Tikokino. The rejects will be used on roads in the vicinity. Leyland lorry; This completed the metalling of Severinsen's road, Clinton, and the li moved to Black's road. Tli>3 llill section has been practically completed, but it has been necessary to suspend operations in the nieanwhile tili the weather is more suitable.

Main Highways. Napier-Palmerston State Highway :— This highway was taken over by the Main Highways Board from August 9, and the council is no longer responsible for the maintenance. Fernhill-Takapau Main Highway : Maintenance and patching on the Takapau-Clinton road. Tho necessary autliority to proeeed with tho reconstrucfcion of one mile through Tikokino was received during the month and the Work has been commenced. Miss Buchanan has been vel'y helpful in her attitude by allowing filling to encroach on to her property and allowing her fences to be moved while the work is in progress. General Msiintenance work was done on the W*ipawa-Poruerere, WaipawaTikokino, Waipawa-Ongaonga, and Wai-pukurau-Matamau Main highways.
