Of this number, 3090 were domiciled in the North Island and 2821 in tbe Soutb. The works upon whicb these men were to bo employed and the numbers engaged in each class of work were briefly suinmarised as follow: — Fortnation, metalling, widening, etc., roads and, streets, 292-1; levelling, fornatio.n, improvements, etc., parks, domains, school grounds and hospital grounds, etc., 1710; rlrainage, river clearing, river protection, etc., 70(5; Iree planting, 517; footpath constructiou, Iserbiug and ehannclling, cfc., 434; miscellanooue, 220; total, 0517.
