MARRIED, FLEW—ALSO RAN
The first of the big athletic carnivals, featuring overseas stars in England, came to pass on August 2, at the White City Stadium, London. There were 83,000 spectators present. Archie San Romani, the great American miler, did several things in order to compete: — Interrupted a honeymoon with his fifth wife. Caught a specially-chartered 'plane as soon as he reached England on the Queen Mary, at Plymoutli, and raced to London for the race. Survived a bumpy landing, in which the 'plane tilted over on to its wing tip. Talked to American A.U.U. executivcs by long - distanoe 'phone to Stockhom, and gained permission to run. Ate a quick steak. After all this, the 83,000 spectators did not criticise him when he was able to come only fifth in the featured mile race, which Sydney Wooderson won iii 4min. 15.8sec.
