Japanese Language Study Proposed in Australian Schools

BEISBANE.— The Queensland Department of Publie Instruetion proposes to have the Japanese language added to the studies at the state ' high schools. Two years from the inception of the course it will be mad© one of the subjects for examination for promotion to the senior grade and after a further two years the subject will be added to the list needed for matriculation. Two years later it will become one of the eourses in the department of modern languages at the University of Queensland. Meanwhile classes for adults under the control of tho Institute of Modern Languages are to be formed and already 50 students have indicated their intention of joining. Dr. A, C. V. Melbourne, associate professor of history at the University of Queensland, ^ recently vi&ited Chinese and Japanese universities with the intention of arranging with them for closer cultural relations with Australia. On his xeturn he xeeommended to the university senate that a lecturer in Japanese history and culture should be appointed to the University of Queensland. The recommendation was adopted and it is now announced that the education and foreign ministries at Tokyo have agreed

to send a lecturer in Japanese to Brisbaue. It is expected that the appointment will bo made soon,
