Free-milk Scheme
E. F.
TAINE.
Sir, — It would be interesting to know whether there are any objectors to the advanced legislation of last year dealing with the free supply of a daily ration of half a pint of milk to all primary school children who care to avail themselves of it. I remember that when the scheme was being discussed by the local edueational authorities oue of the Hastings members of the Hawke's Bay Education Board voiced the opinion that a sufficient supply of milk would not be forthcoming in this district. However, the job was gone on with, and the happy result cau be seen by auyone interested enongh to go along to any of the local sehools at the appropriate time. I think it is a matter of some regret that no official reeognition of this matter was undertaken in Hastings. Those interested in welf are matters must kuow the wonderful benefit of this free milk to an unfortunately too large pereentage of children attending primary scliools. This scheme has commenced in Hastings without any fuss whatsoever, and one almost wishes that it were necessary to pull out a hedge or cut down a tree or two to get the supply of milk. I think the Government deserves several pats on the back for instituting the free-milk-in-schools scheme, and I am sorry that our city f athers * did not seize the opportunity to give them one or two from Hastings. — Yours. etc.,
Hastings, 7/9/37.
