CONTROL OF TRAFFIC
Complaint From Unknown Person COUNCIL "RECEIVES" LETTER Elxception has been taken by the Hastings Borough Counoil" to a - complaint received through the Commissioner of Transport with regard to speeding motorists, careless riding by cyclists and drivers without licences, many of whom are held to be under 16 years of age. The Commissioner refuges to disclose who lodged the complaint, and the counoil decided last evening to merely "receive" the correspondence. The Commissioner stated in his advice that he had advised tho complainant that the control of traffic in Hastings was under the jurisdiction of the Borough Council, and further, that it would appear from tha accident records that the complainant was probably exaggerating. The matter was referred to the council for any action it deemed necessary. The Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, reported at the meeting of the council last evenjng that he had instructed the .Town Clerk to.write to the department, suggesting that in a complaint of this nature the council shquld be informed •of the author of the complaint, and a full copy of his letter should be supplied. Information regarding the control of traffic, and the absence of aceidents, was also supplied to the department. A reply had been received from the department, he said, to the effect that it was not its policy to reveal the source of complaints of this nature, even when, as suggested, they appeared to be trivial. The department suggested that- if the complainant was genuine in his complaint, that he would no doubt take the matter ■ up with the council direct, and that if not, nothing further need be done.
