Brinsden 2 Up on Crosse in Morning Round SPLENDID CONDITIONS
The final of the Hawke's Bay amateur golf championship between H. D. Brinsden Titirangi, Auckland, and H. E. Crosse, Napier, commenced on the Waiohiki links this morning under very favourable conditions, the weather being fine and the course in tip-top order. Following is a deseription of this morning 's round, which finished with Brinsden 2 up. First hole: Both good drives, Brinsden being behind the tree on the left. He crashed through the top of the tree with his second, fell clear and was on with his third. Crosse was on the green with his second, and took 2 putts to Brinsden 's one. The hole was halved in fours. Second hole: Both good drives at the terrace. Both on with their second. Brinsden took 2 putts, and Crosse 3. The latter lipped the hole with his second, but downed with his third. Brinsden won the hole, 4 to 5. Third hole: Narrow neck. Both good drives., Crosse was just short of the green with his second. Brinsden put his second down the bank to the left out of bounds. He play ed his third on to tho green with a nice long shot. Crosse was short with his run-up putt, and put short of the hole with his next. Brinsden over-ran the hole by 10 feet with his first putt, but sank the return. The hole was halved in 5. Fourth hole (short): Brinsden was just through the green with his tee shot. Crosse half fluffed his drive when 40 yards short of the green. He got nicely on with his second, but missed a 15-foot putt for 3. Brinsden ran up nicely and sank his third. Brinsden won' the hole, 3 to 4, and was now 2 up. ' Fifth hole: Both got good drives, Crosse to the edge of tho terrace. Brinsden 's drive ended up in the bunker to the left of the third green. He played a beautiful shot to the grfeen, but ran over the back bank bunker. Crosse also landed on the green and ran through. Both were nicely on with their third, 2 putts each. A half in fives. Slxth hole: Two good drives, Crosse a little to the left. His approach. shot was 10 yards to the left of the green. Brinsden was nicely on the green. Crosse pitched up short of the pin; two putts each. Brinsden 's hole, 4 to 5. Brinsden 3 up. Seventh hole (short): Two beautiful shots to the green. Brinsden was high to the left, and Crosse short of tho pin. His first putt stymied Brinsden, but Brinsden, taking advantage of the. slope, holed out for 2. Brinsden 4 up. Eighth hole: T\yo good drives. Crosse was 40 yards short .of the green with his second. Brinsden was straight, but slightly short of the green. He was too strong with his Tun-up and just missed tho return. Crosse was nicely on with his third, and holed out hi3 putt for a 4 to Brinsden 's 5. Brinsd.en 3 up. Nintli hole: Two good drives. Crosse was nicely on with his second. Brinsden was in the liollow, but pitched. right up to the pin with his third, and was out in 4. Crosse took two putts; a half in 4. Brinsden 3 up. Tenth Hole: Two good drives, witb Brinsden slightly in the rough. Both ! were on with their secouds. Brinsden missed an awkward putt. Crosse holed his iu 3. Brinsden 3 up. Eleventh Hole : Two good drives and good seconds. Both were on in 3, 2 putts each. A half in 5. Tweiftli Hole (The pig sties) : Two good drives. Brinsden was near the fence. His second was below the bank. Orosso was nicely on with. his second. Brinsden pitched up strong just ,over the green. A nice run-in and down in 5. Crosse made no mistake with two putts winning the hole 4 to o. Brinsden 2 up. Tlnrfeenth Hole: Two good drives. Both were on to-tlie green with tlieir seconds, Crosse running a little off to tlie back. Both were up to the pinnicely. A hrlf in 4. Eourteeuth Hole (short) .* Crosse was nicely on with his tee shot, and Biinsden a little to the right short of ihe green. His second rau past the pin to the right five feet away. Crosse ran past the pia with liis putt and t tymicd Brinsden, who failed to negotiate it. Crosse's hole, 3 aud four. Brinsden one up. Eifteeuth Hole: Crosse drove well clear of the tree. Brinsden just cr.rled round the end of the tree. Two good seconds just short of tlie green. Crosse was on to the green, but was short of the pin with his approach. Brinsden ran jn well, taking one putt to Crosse's two. Brinsden won the hole, 4 to 5. Brinsden again 2 up. Bixteenth Hole: Two good drives. Brinsden had a beautiful secoud almost on the green. Crosse pushed his second out to the left; He was nicely on witli his third, and was out in 4. Brinsden was on nicely, and also got a 4. A half resulted, Sevcutoeth Hole: Brinsden was well over the road and l'ound tlie nunker to tbe right. Crosse Swas nicely on, five feet short of tlie pm. Briusden was nicely out of the huuker to the baok of the green und holed « leiig putt for 3. Crosse sauk his putt ior 2 anj won tlie hole. Brinsden oue up. Eighte^uLh Hole: Crosse just cleared tlie sandliills with his drive. and Brinsden was well down the fairway, oO yards aliead. Crosse played a beautiful shot to the green, which ran througn on to the putting green out of bounds. He played his third just short of the green. Brinsden iound tho bunker with his second, aud was iust sliort. oi tbe green with his third. Crosse rau m with his iourth but missed his fifth. Brinsden holed his putt and won the hole, 5 to 6, and finished the morning round 2 up. The scores for tho morning iound are : — » Brinsden, 74. He was out in 36 and home in 38. Crosse, 76. Ho was out. in 40 aud houie in 36.
