The attack of Gover, Nichols and Wellard set the New Zealand cricketers a difficult task on a hard ahd i'ast wicket against Leveson-Gower's eleven. Five were out lor 150^ four being caught by the wicket-keeper or in the slips off snicks. Hadlee was in brilliant form, driving powerfully. His score included six tours and one six. The New Zealanders batted briskly, scoriiig much l'aster than the opposing team did yesterday. Moloney hit four i'ours iu a brief but bright innings. Donnellv also was enterprising. Weir was confident and aggressive at a difficult time. He lnl eight fours. Eight wickets were down for 204. Lowry and Cowie smote the pace boiylers despite the fact that they were using a new ball, adding 74 runs. Cowie chose an opportuue time to knock up his highest score ot the tour ; lie hit at almost every ball, scoring seveu fours. Lowry kept pace in the pa'rtnership which lasted only half.an hour. New Zealand accomplished a fine performance iu dismissing five of the opposition batsmen. Brilliant fielding enhanced the deadiiness* of the bowling. Kerr made a good catch at square-log). Cowie wa^ respousibJe for a spectacular one-handed effort at mid-off. and Hoberts made a good running catch at the sight-screen. Gallichan held a canuon-bail return from Hardstalf.
