(By Telegraph-
AUUJiDAiNJL), xnis nay. Women performing manual labour in the fields, grim-visaged Nazi poliee overywhere, a poor harvest rcaped with primitive scjrthes, inferior living conditions, strict laws cnforced by an unbending Government, practically no agricultural macliinery, farraers growing grain crop3 but unable to feicd wheat to fowls; these are among the impressions of modern Germany obtaim cd by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, National M.P. for Egmont, who retufned by the Akaroa this morning from an extensive business tour of Britain and the Continent. "A large portion of the national revenue," said Mr. Wilkinson, "is being exxpended on armaments, and Germany is tightening her belt. Very rigid control is enforeed in the dfsposal of crops. Everything is under Government control — even every yard of agricultural land — but this year The harvest was bad and the country undergoing a very difiicult period. Liv-
ing conditiofis are definltely below tbose of Britain and New Zealand." In contrast to Germany, Mr. Wilkinson said,- Czechoslovakia appeared to be thriving. He attributed her contentment and prosperity to the recent change of Government. "England is prospering," he added. "There are no signs of unemployment, and London is growing at a rapid pace. Factories are being built in all directions. The city limits are being extended." He added that new cars were going on the roads at the rate of 500 a day. "Reaxmament is going on at an unprecedented rate. It is responsible for tlie scarcity of Taw materials and labour. While I altogether agree with this policy, I think it may eventually cause a reaction. " Mr. Wilkinson paid a glowing tribute to the New Zealand High Conimissioner. "Mr. Jordan," he said, "seems to b'e filling the bill in a very satisfactory manner. He is very popular and gives immenso service to all visitors from New Zealand.."
