WANGANUI MEETING

"The Barb")

Spring Fixhire Opens To-morrow REVIEW OF THE PR0SPECTS

(By

Good acceptances liave been received for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey dub's spring meeting which cornmences to-morrow. The indications are that fOlloWing upon recent rain, the going will be fairly soft, but a recent break in the weather will have the effect of drying up flie track to some extent. 11.50: HUNTER STEEPLECHASE. ^ They are not a very brilliant lot. Croydon was in the money last Thursday, whau- he was runner-up to Ninkle at_ JSTew Plymoutk, with Sleepy third— fair form. Cotsheld is at kis best distauce, so he sliould go close once again to win on this particular track. Platter ran two seconds at New Plymouth. Tommy Atkins goes well for about once round and then cries enough. Acroii, froni Waipukurau, has recently b6eu twico second at a point-to-point meeting, which is just about as good form as any of the others not previously mentioned posscssos. The betting market may favour CEOYDEN, COTSEIELD, PLATTER.

12.30: MAIDEN RACE. Civxl is a daughter of that one-time brilliant mare Civility, and is said to go fast. Joe Louis is a fair niaiden, although he has been in this class for some time; at present he appears to have improved. Amoroso is an untried four-year-old gelding by Philamor from •T. H. Jefferd's Ngatarawa team, and goes fast; so, despite lack of racing expericnce, he must be considered. White Gold is a three-year-old iilly, the property of Mr T. H. Lowry and trained by Et. S. Greeno at Greeu* meadows. She is a half-sister, by Hunting Song, to the Auckland Cup winner, Gold Trail. She is a proniising galloper and, like Amoroso, has yet to be tried publicly, but that will not deter her Greenmeadows suppdrters. Taking tlio field as a whole, nothing stands out on public form. The favourite may come from JOE LOUIS, WHITE GOLD and AMOROSO. 1.10: OKEHU HACK HUKDLES Donegal shaped well at the Dannevirke Hunt and then went on to win at Wellington, where he also rau second, but lijs last run, at Bulls, was disappointing and, his only poor race since he started over hurdles. Trackman was second last Saturday, when i'or some unknoxvn reason he was made favourite. Master Norval, Even Money and Aiguille have little racing experience over hurdles. True Shaft may surprise. Top Hat has been schooling in a manner that suggests that the big fellow migbt be dangerous. The others hardly appeal. What will be better backed than DONEGAL, TOP HAT aud TRACKMAN ? 1.60: PUTIKI HAOK HAND1CAP Tail-light has his work cut out at 9.2. Hunting Queen has been racing below expectations. Winsome Lu failed last xveek-cnd. Quadroon last season gave promise of developing into a handicap hor'se, so that the Nigger MinstrelLiason four-year-old wjll be carefully watched to-morrow. Middle" has two recent winning brackets opposite his naine, and racing form condition is a factor to be recognised early in a season. Tidewater was second at Riccarton in his last start. Tractile is useful but no more. Black Fox is reported very fit. All Spirit beat a poor field only in the Nccklace on Saturday. In an evenlv- backed field most money may be carried by TIDEWATER,, MIDDLE and GUADROON. 2.30: HIGGIE HANDICAP. Taitoru, g, very fit horse, will be expected again to go very close to collecting first prize. Hunting Cat has not raeed for just on 11 months, so it is only natural to expect that he will he in want of a couple of races before he is a betting proposition. Persen raced l'airly 'well at New Plymouth without beiiig iu the money bufc at 8.6 he does not appeal greatly. Gold Mission has racing condition on her side. Entail may surpriee, but this St. Legcr winner has been a big disappointment. Mnine has been galloping fairly well here, and boing fit, may go close, The handieapper has taken a risk with Cerne Abbas, the winner of the last Great Northern Oaks and St. Lcger, iu awarding only 7.8, or 201b. .below w.t'.a. In l'act, it looks as if he cithcr ovcrlooked tliose two classic wins or attaches but little significance to them. Grand Jury is another that has gpt in light. Three that may appeal most are CERNE ABBAS, TAUTORU and GRAND JURY. 3.15: SEAFIELD HANDICAP. Friesland is entitled to top weight i ou form, but perhaps is not back to last autuinn's best. Lowenberg is better over a ionger distance. Guy Rebel was second on Saturday at New Ulyi r.t utli to Taitoru aud will be all Ihe Lttter for that race. Might was uever i one to piu much faith to. Slippery must not be discarded altogether. The best of the others appears on form to be that pi'omising liaok Myriam, v.ho recently at the NaConal was a f-ist and second. The betting order may be GAY REBEL MYRIAM and FRIESLAND. 4.0: DUR1E HACK HANDICAP Joviality goes fast but is unreliable. Dancing Lady won on Thursday last. Feiicitatiou galloped well enough beiore going away to be given a fairly good chance of success on the trip. Rhodesian, by Vaals, is reputed to be good; be won at Otaki but, wlien -trongly supported at. I 'fotitLa-n last July, failed. Kivo G kl is ilisappointinent ' Raceall has .but little form. Shirrcd Ribbon is galloping well. but her chance i

i would be better it the distance were longer. However, she must go a good race. The others hardly appeal, but three that do are FELICITATION, DANCING LADY and SHIRRED BiBBON. 4.45: FLYING HANDICAP Ben Braggie has already proved hitaself a first-class spfintef, bui hero he has a tough job ahead to givo weight away to thfee cir four -ruost prdmising three-year-olds. Royal Chief won three classics last season, and as he is very forward tliis colt ilx F. D. Jones's stable will be one of the best-backed. Laugliing Lass has won in company equal to the standard of the opposition in this race. Debham was an itnprover last season. Pakanui has only to run up to liis private form to have a good chance, but many nowadays doubt that he nroduces his private form in public. Haughty Winner is forward and has already proved hintself a brilliant galloper, although in the late autumn of last season he did go off form a little. GreCnwich last season as a two-year-oid was very fast, but liardly measured up to the best form. The Limond-Aspic filly, Iciug, has been galloping most impressively at Wanganui ; in fact, she is thought likely to beat Royal Chief in the Guineas on Baturday, so that if she is galloping so attractively sliould have a" great chance on the minimum. Recovery may be looked to from ROYAL CHIEF, HAUGHTY WINNER and ICING.
