CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. "An intolerable position has arisen and drastic- eteps"have been necessary,'' sai^ the Minister of Public W.orks, Hon. R. Semple, to-day, in referring to a strike of 80 men employed by the Pubiic Works Department on road oonstruction work at Bruce Bay, South .Westland. Mr Semple said he had sent the men an ultimatum, ordering them to return to the job -and stating that refusal meant . dismissal. - Mr Semple received news of the strike on Friday^ '.and as a result of' investigations he has . satisfied himeelf that the men had not acted constitutionally within the terms of the Public Works agreement and that they had no just cause for striking.
