Apprentices in Building Scheme government's pr'opos/\L

WELLINGTON, This Day. Plans adopted by the Government for subsidising the wages of apprentices in the building and allied trades out of the unemployment funds were announccd by the acting-Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, in an interview last evening, These' subsidies are intended to provide employment for young men who missed their opportunity to learn skilled trades during the depression years, and at the same timo overcome the shortuge of skilled labour in the building trade. They range from £1 5/- to 5/- a wcek, and cover a period of three years in tlie carpentering and joinery trade, and two years in the bricklaying trade, amounting in the first year to almost half the total wages paid. The scale of sub,sidy is as follows (with total minimum wages in pnrentheses) : — CARPENTERS AND JOINERS. Commencing at 18 years of age: First year, 15/- (£1 12/6); socond year, 11)/- (£2 12/G) ; third year, 5/- (£3 7/6). Commencing at 19 years of age and over: First year, £1 (£2 2/6); second year, 15A (£3 2/6); third year, 10/(£4 2/G). BKICELAYERS, Commencing at 18 years of age: First year, £1 (£2 2/6); second year, 10/- (£3 2/6). Commencing at 19 years of age and over: First year, £1 5/- (£2 12/6); second year, 10/- (£3 12/6). liates thereafter will be at the scale of pay for jonrneymen.
