Our Own Correspoudent.)

Service Car Overturns

(From

WAIROA, Scpt. 6. But for the skill and promptness of the driver, Mr Ered White, serious consequences might have followed when a service car from Napier came to a slip near Lake Tutira last eveuing. The car swung round a bend, and the driver had only a few feet in which to puljl up or steer his heayy vehicle past the toe of tho slip. The road was groasy, and when he applied his brakes the car siciddcd and swung outwards. Realising that liis vehicle would probably go over the bank if unchecked, Mr White accelerated quickly and swung his wheol hard to tthe left towards the inner sido of the toad. Th«« car swung completely round, with tho radiator pointing towards Napier, and turned on its side, with the underpnrt of tho chassis pointing out, and the irood rcstiug against the slip. By this timo, it had lost its momentum, and it turned over, in tho words of a passenger, "as liglitly as a feather." Neither the driver nor any of the four passengers, all of whom praise tlie dnver's presence of mind and skill, was injured. Tlie passengers wore picked up by tho following service car aud reached Wairoa last night after ouly a sliglu delay. . Tlie niaiu south road, while open for traffic, is partly obstructed by small slips and wash-outs in the gorges and cuttiugs, and carc is neeessary on th» part of all drivera.
