THE OCEAN NOT ENOUGH
A young aud numerically sinall nation, we own lands and resources coveted by far stronger natious that are by uo means scrupulous. Well as we inay have doue in the past, it would be sbeer sell'-delu- , sion to imagine we could defeud ourselves alone. It is wili'ul- blindness to disregard the i'act that the oceau by itself is uo longer the protection it ouce was. Ecouomically wg could be brought to our knees in short order wwe not the Empire our shield. It is ludicrous to suppose that. the Mouroe Doetrine would help us. ff we were in danger, the Uuited States would almost certainly have its work cut out to protect itself, The very nature of the Empire, however, provides the precise type of defence we need, and we are neither so foolish nor so poor nor so meau as to expcct insurance coverage without paying a premiuxn in some form. Over and above this the chance of our being entangled in an otherwise avoidable war through our association with Britain or the Empire is so remote as to he negjigibie. A foreign policy of her own but related to that of the Empire, uot isolation} is tlierefore what Canada needs, remembering that" the British Empire is indeed "not a bad institution to be linked up with." — St. Johu (N.B ) Telegrapb Journal.
