H.B.-Wairarapa Centre's Annual Meeting

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. At Waipukurau on Saturday afternoon, under the chairmanship of Mr J, W. Watkins, Ashley Clinton, the annual meeting of the Hawke 's Bay Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen's Union, incorporating the Wairarapa Oentre, was held. There were present Messrs D. Eddy (a viee-president), C. Thomsen, P. Drummond, D. Howse, W. Pettit, and it. Thomsen (representing the Tikokino, Makaretu, Puketapu, and Ongaonga clubs, and the Waipukurau A. and P. Aesociation, respectively) and Mr G Eeg. Cook (secretary). Mr A. D. McCartney, of Napier, the Dominion secretary, was in attendance. The eleetion of oiiicers resulted: — Patron, Mr John Chambers, Havelock North; presi.dent, Mr J. W. Watkins, Ashley Clinton; vice-presidents, Mrs F. L- White, Messrs W. Cuthbertson, D. Eddy, P. J. S. George, W. Pettit, W. Tucker, D. J. Holden, Chxis. Berkahn, - C. Nelson, R. P. Wilder, J. Nix, B. Drysdale, and l'\ E. Ward; exeeutive, Messrs J. W. Watkins, W. Pettit, D. Eddy, E. M. Langley, C. Thomsen, G. Reg. Cook, L. R. Grant, P. Drummond, D. J. Holden and R. Thomsen; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr G. Reg. Cook, A.C.S. (N.Z.); hon. auditor, Mr I. W. Elliott, Waipukurau; handicappers, Messrs D. Howse and C. Berkahn (Hawke 's Bay), Messrs J. Bambry, J. D. Morrison and D. J. McAuley (Wairarapa). The secretary was unanimously reeleeted, Mr Eddy stating that Mr Cook was regarded ae the beat centre secretary in New Zealand. A petition from 17 axemen asking that nommation fees be reduced to 1/in the £ on first-prize money was debated at length. The secretary pointed out that the present basis for fees equalled 7i per cent. on the first-prize money. Mr F. Thomsen proposed that the centre forward a remit to the Dominion Conference suggesting that the maximum fee be fixed at 5 per cent. in respect of all prize-money. The chairman and Mr Eddy eonsidered that the matter should be left to the discretion of the clut>s. After considerable discussion the mover withdrew his proposal. On the motion of Mr C. Thomsen, seconded by Mr Pettit, it was decided to circularise the clubs in regard to the matter, with a view to unanimity. The New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union forwarded an appreciative letter about the treatment accorded deiegates to the Dominion Conference held in Waipukurau last year. A letter was read from Mr M. Robson, Taradale, stressing the need for afiiliation on "the part of the Taradale Choppers' Club, involving seeond-claes axemen. The club offered a fee of £1 1/tor 1937-38. Mr Eddy expressed the opinion that a B grade for choppers should be eiw • couraged, it being evident that there | was a growing demand for such a class I of competitor. In the case of Taradale I it was shown, that thex'e were 18 comI petitors involved. It was decided to I. refer the matter to the executive for I determination. I In regard to the Dominion Conference the president gave a brief outline i as to the reception accorded remits j forwarded by the Hawke 's Bay Centre. j Of eiglxt propoeitiona four were carried, Ithree lost, and one Teferred to the executive. He expressed satisfaction that a remit had been carried ensuring uniformity of control throughout the Dominion. The cases of three defaulters were dealt with at the meeting. The names of two were placed on the usual list and thev, Cher is to be communicated with in respeet of his arrears. The axemen's committee of the Waipukurau A. and P. Assoeiation met subsequently, Mr J. W. Watkins being reelected as chairman. The menibers present were all the delegates to the meeting of the Hawke 's Bay Centre of the N.Z. Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union. Au apology caxne from Mr J. J. Skidmore (Waipukurau). ■ The programme for the 1938 show wa#i eonsidered and the prize-money, also nomination fees, fixed. The prizes were based on the saxne figures as for 1937. . .
In regard to the Porangahau 12-inch 6tanding chop it was decided that the event be -changed to a second-class choppers' handicap. Mr R. Thomsen stated that the cost of blocks had increased considerably siuce last year, being 5/6 per block as agaijxst 3/6 last year. This quote was aecepted. Oflicials were appointed as follows: — Judges, Messrs S. Hull (Tikokino) and iw. Thomsen (Makaretu); referee, Mr Harold Worsnop; handicapper, Mr D. Howse. Ashley Clinton; starter, Mr Tui Nicol, Tikokino; check starters, Messrs Horace and E. Worsnop; timekeepers, Mesers I. W. Watkins, Ashley Clinton, and W. Pettit, Ongaonga; assistant secretary, Mr B. Dassler, Ongaonga; chief steward, Mr C. Thomsen, Ashley Clinton; ring Btewards, Messrs A. A. Hutt (Tikokino), F. G. R. Dassler (Ongaonga), H. B. Roach (Waipukurau), W. Oliver (Tikokino), P. Ford (Waipawa), J. G. Blair (Waipukurau), P. Thomsen (Ashley' Clinton), 0. Churclx (Gisborne), Tui Nicol (Tikokino;, W. Jackson (Tikokino), R. Holnis (Waipukurau), .Laugliton Williauis (Waipukurau), W. Giddcns (Waipukurau), A. A. Hutt and F. G. R. Dassler (Ongxxonga). A special conxmittee was set up consisting of Messrs G. Reg. Cook, R. Tkomeen and L. R. Grant (Waipukurau) for the purpose of dealing with inatters of urgency.
