DEFECTIVE FLOODGATE
Papakura Land Flooded Owing to a defective floodgate, a considerable area of land at Papakura during the week-end was flooded. The matter is to be attended to immediately by tho Ilawke'a Bay Rivers Board. . At to-day 's meeting, Mr J. H. Sheath [jointed out that the floodgate was most unsatisfactory, and its failure to.function was rfesponsible for a considerable amount of flooding. The floodgate had beconie warpod, with the result that water poured through it. Once the gate was fixed up the preaent' trouble would |je overcome. Mr G. Fairey pointed out that one settler had 80 acres flooded, and as a result ho was placed iu a rather serious position, for he was unable to reinove tii-s ewes and lambs. The chairman, Mr C. Lassen, explained that until the cliannel on the inside was cut down some inconvenience would be expcrienccd. Tliere was a d rop of three feet at the bridge, and if that could be cut down for some distance up the river the position would bo aSsisted considerably. The engineer, Mr G. Rochfort, explained that no report had been made eonccruing tlie gate being warped, but ho would see that it was attended to without delay.
